Rottnest Island has many different events but a few more famous ones would be the Rottnest Channel Swim which is an annual event conducted by the Rottnest Channel Swim Association with the aim to promote interest in swimming across the Rottnest Channel. The event is a 19.2 kilometre swim from Cottesloe Beach to Rottnest Island and is one of the world's largest open water swims with the 2004 event attracting 2303 swimmers.
Not reserved for the swimming elite, competitors can choose to swim as individuals, duos or teams of four.

Another famous Rottnest Island event which draws much media attention is schoolies or leavers.Schoolies week is that time of year when school leaver's, just after finishing their final exams decide its time to let their hair down and party amongst friends. Rottnest Island is a favorite location to get away.In the past, there have been numerous problems and issues with anti-social behaviour, disruption to other island visitors, damage and other offences being committed however Schoolies week is well policed and planned these days and ex-students seem to behave fairly well but when there is alcohol involved it is often expected for an incident or two to occur.
